 Combat Evolved. My family at the time were among those new comers, and so within a week of Halo 2's release my family instituted a bi-weekly lan party. Halo: Combat Evolved was groundbreaking on it's release. Similar to how Half-Life was revolutionary in game physics, Halo has some seriously tight gunplay compared to just about every other shooter out there at the time. Halo: Combat Evolved was truly innovative for it's time and it was further cemented in the revered hall of classics due to it's truly wonderful soundtrack and character development. I don't think it's an overstatement to say that game had a significant impact on gaming as a whole, it did a lot to show that games were more than something kids play and introduced a lot of adults to the truly rewarding experience that gaming can be, rivaling good movies and books to boot. It was similar for the dungeons. I liked the divine beast quests; they always had you doing something interesting, and I loved all the neat characters I met who would help me out. But the divine beasts just felt uninspired. Boring, lifeless rooms that look exactly the same as shrines and the other divine beasts. Oh boy. Not a lot of combat, copy paste enemies, uninteresting puzzules. Just nothing drew me into it. If you really connect with exploration and making your own fun with the physics engine BotW is an amazing game. And that half it was for me. But it lacks the "Zelda spirit" I feel in other titles. But the reward always sucked. The payoff was always a shrine, and I didn't like most of the shrines. The ones with quests to get them open were cool. The one in the jungle where you have to climb up in the rain baffled me for some time. But then later I found a way up a nearby mountain and glided down. I felt like a goddamn genius. But that was maybe 5% of the shrines. The others were mostly boring puzzles and uninteresting combats. I beat a lot of them, but I have no desire to do all 120. Finally, my biggest gripe with BotW was the power scaling. I spent so much time farming items to get better equipment and armor for the final ganon fight. I leveled up so much armor, farmed so many bomb and fire arrows. But just wound up using the Master Sword. Also the cooking was just a flat out awfully unbalance system. At one point, I just found out that you could just keep fast traveling to a certain location to farm durians that will give you +4 temporary hearts when eaten. To make things worse, the DLC just left me feeling bitter. I remember first getting into the Master Sword Quest. I really wanted some challenging gauntlet where I could use my entire arsenal. I love Zelda for the dungeon crawling, bosses, and music. I love how varied dungeons are throughout the series. But BotW just had four dungeons that were identical, and 120 shrines that were also identical. There was no actual reason to do any shrines once you have max hp and stamina. The bosses sucked to be frank. You fight four similar enemies in the main dungeons. The overworld bosses are kinda cool. But at the end, I was just farming Lynels and not even having fun. People seem to love the BotW music, but it just fell flat. The little ambient music just didn't interest me. Yea, it doesn't have the mystery and intrigue that Wind Waker has imo. It's still a fun chill game. I think there is a good deal of hidden depth with the natural systems like wind, fire, and such. People do some pretty nutty stuff in that game but my mind just isn't there. I love the Zelda franchise. But BotW just didn't do it for me. In general, I'm just not a fan of open world games. Couldn't get through other critically acclaimed ones like Witcher and Horizon. But I did beat BotW and I put like 70 hours into it. But you know what? For me, I liked the game, but it wasn’t until I stumbled onto something that I didn’t remember the game explaining where it really clicked for me. I was being chased by a group of enemies in a grassy plain and used a flame broadsword to try to knock some of them down. When I did so, I noticed that it caught the grass on fire and created an updraft. I jumped and took out my parasail, and as I flew up I was spotted by several guardians at once, which I was able to take out as I fell back down with a few ancient arrows that I’d been saving up. It was the first time that I realized just how much everything worked together, and a big part of it is finding how flexible the game really is. I love 3D Mario Games, I like other 2D platformers, I even enjoyed the side-scrolling parts of Odyssey. But my brain cannot grasp 2D Mario. When I see people play it or god forbid Mario Maker, I’m in shock because no matter what I intend to do on World 1-1, I struggle for every inch. I’ve beat dozens of games in dozens of systems/genres, but absolutely cannot grasp 2D Mario Never liked Paper Mario. As a youngun it didn’t make sense to me why they needed to make everything paper and 2D. It’s one of the reasons I like the Mario and Luigi game series more. Personally, what I love about Dishonored is the challenge. Just the thought of being able to dictate the story based on my stealth skills? Oh yeah, I’ll show em. I completed the first one completely ghost and non-lethal, although a lot of people I know argue that that’s the most boring way to play it 3 missions? I haven’t played it in a while but the magical abilities you have make that game for me, I’d at least try getting to that point if you haven’t already. Probably my biggest gripe with the game was that it didn't feel like a Zelda game to me. I was really disappointed (but totally understood why) with the durability system, because I'm the kind of person who tries to save the best weapons for as late as possible. It could be the fact that there are moons literally everywhere and that getting one takes really ruins the flow of gameplay, or maybe it's that despite the hat mechanic being really cool it just never seems to have been used to it's full potential. Where are the koopa enemies? There's a pretty obvious possession ability there, just scoot around in your shell. Not to mention that there isn't really a consistent increase in difficulty. I really enjoyed the new God of War while I was playing it, but as soon as I finished I knew I didn't want to play it again. It was pretty and the story was engaging, but overall I felt like another playthrough wouldn't add anything to my experience. I'm definitely on board for a sequel, but I do hope they give it more overall depth. I never really understood the critical acclaim of Bioshock's gameplay. Atmosphere was great but my memory of playing the game years ago is just being frustrated feeling so weak at times and dying multiple times to big daddies. Damn... I really hope you find someone you can have genuine fun with. Please don't let that experience diminish your trust in others too much. I've had experiences that cut my trust in others down and I realized rather late that it's not healthy to distrust others as a default state of mind. I didnt really like apex legends lol. my extremely toxic and emotionally abusive ex boyfriend would force me to play it with him. he bought a whole console to put in my bedroom so we could play it all the time. he would get mad if i didnt know the lingo or if i died. he punched my $600 tv when i didnt get a kill. he threw controllers at my walls and would break mirrors with his feet. it was the worst thing ive ever dealt with in that sense. he almost tried to strangle me a few times and would ask why i was crying. he broke up with me because we didnt get a win one time and it was the most relieving thing ever. a year later he is texting me and telling me he misses me and is pretending nothing ever happened. smh. I remember when it came out and got a big following, but I was more gta guy. Played mafia 3, wasn't great, and I'm hearing bad things about the remaster, so I'll probably just wait for the 1 remake to see what it's about. This one has surprised me the most so far. Everytime I come back to that game I’m struck by the beauty and the impressive nature of the machines. On top of that the designers created an incredibly beautiful layout for the environments. Really feels like a world. That game was more dated than Morrowind and with longer loading screens. I quit when there was a mission that had me walk from inside a town bar to outside the town and then back... 3 loading screens and no action was involved. Wasn’t a real fan of the gameplay, thought it got repetitive and boring and the story didn’t hook me enough. I also found the way the conversations between NPC’s and the player were framed were weird. Thinking I may give it another shot cuz a buddy of mine is playing it and he likes and we got similar tastes. This is the first time I thought a game had bad "cinematography". Maybe that's not the correct word, but the back and forth style of camera movement when Aloy is talking to someone reminded me of FO4. People don't always stand right in front of each other and talk. It's ok to have somebody sharpening a sword and looking off to the side while Aloy is kicking dirt off her shoes or something. It makes the people seem less "alive" imo. I love Zelda games, too. I just can’t stand the weapon durability system in BoTW. Everything breaks in 5 min of use. It drives me up the wall. I’ve played and enjoyed plenty of games with a durability mechanic, but BoTW crosses the line into just being annoying. I’ve been tempted to download the emulator version with mods to turn off durability. I’d probably actually get through the game if I did. This is a fair criticism, but I also never really found myself short on weapons. You can carry so many by the end of the game. I think the issue with the Batmobile was just that it was overutilized in the story and the Riddler missions. It controlled well and was a ton of fun early on, it just got tedious after the umpteenth tank fight against the same five enemy types. I really enjoyed using it to solve environmental puzzles, like the one where you rappel with the batmobile down the vent shaft or whatever it was. Everyone was clamoring for the Batmobile back in those days, one example where a developer shouldn't listen to fan feedback when it drastically changes the overall feel of your game. I used to really love fighters. I'd say 60% of the fun is playing against friends and 40% is unlocking everything. The fact that in the ps3 era I could just unlock everything with $10 bucks already killed half that fun, but now that there's nothing you can do to unlock shit ON THE DISC without whipping out the credit card kills the rest. Make me defeat every character with nothing but throws or get 100 flawless victories with a weak character to unlock stuff, just don't make the full game an extra $20 with no way to play for it.  Halfway through the game, it introduces pointless platforming sections which drag out for far too long for a game about chaotic action. Some levels don't have any enemies and is solely made for the sake platforming. On top of that. the game introduces insta-death traps and annoying wait-&-move segments. If I wanted platforming, I would play a game that advertises itself as a platformer There are heaps of difficulty spikes for no apparent reason. E.g The second last boss of the game shares the same moveset as the player, and is probably the most difficult boss in the game, but the true final boss after it is one of the easiest in the game. - The controls are very wonky at first. The dodging mechanic is the first thing that comes to mind when I played this. As you just spin around and can barely counter attack as firing while dodging is practically useless since bullets just fly everywhere. Split-firing is also feels unpolished.  Some of the boss fights are incredibly tedious as they involve exploiting a very obvious weakness that is usually easy to attack which then downgrades boss fights into a rinse and repeat exercise. Honestly Skyrim, I set myself off on a mission and next thing I know three hours later I'm finally coming out of a random cave I walked into with a bunch of equipment I didn't need/want and I still haven't completed what I wanted to complete. Fallout 3. I loved New Vegas, got along just fine with FO4 (and currently working on FO76), but FO3 just never clicked with me. The horse is designed to automatically move away from collisions if you don't touch the movement controls. People crash because they try to turn away when close to an object and it messes with the auto-avoid. I always hated that. Let the player’s input be the priority ffs. especially when a lot of the times the auto swerve takes me to the opposite direction I wanted to go. My friend and I went from playing rdr2 online for hours at a time to just 5 mins a day to get dailies done and maintain a streak. Every 30 mins one of us would say "fucking horse!" because the stupid thing will swerve INTO shit while holding the button to go the opposite direction. My most requested feature is to shoot my horse in the head until I can purge the stupid from the species. As someone who played a lot of red dead 2, I can say for a fact your horse is determined to smash into every tree, rock, fence, carriage, animal, and person it comes near. Makes me look at horses in other games and realize how stiff and horrible they seem compared to the horses from RDR2. I always avoided calling my horse in AC Odyssey and Witcher 3 and just tried traveling by foot. It was a hunting simulator for me, at least the first 15 hours of my gameplay. I remember liking the bullet hell section and the ending I got, but I only played it twice in 2015 and then never again. I understand why people don’t like it, some areas drag on forever and some dialogue drags even more. The game beats you over the head with the mercy thing, too. I have good memories of the game, but I wouldn’t play it again. I like it better as a base for mods and multiplayer servers. Single player is ok, but it is tricky to get into since it is the sandboxiest of sandbox games, if that makes sense. Yeah but I tend to like the grind sometimes. I usually get to just try stuff out on my own and build some cool things. Sometimes it gets boring but I just like to try new things. Every time I start a new world I try some th big different. In this world I had the nether update so I started using the nether wood and black stone bricks and I made a nether transport system which was fun which I’m adding ice to now. I always make myself do something new which keeps the game entertaining and usually what trades I find dictate what stuff I build. Reminds me of Lara Croft, especially in the new Tomb Raider games. Can’t so much as take a peek into any tombs without them collapsing around her and crumbling to dust by the time she leaves. Can’t go to any historically significant locations without apocalyptic floods, fires, and/or earthquakes following right behind her. Great action hero, terrible archaeologist. In the first sequence in Raiders he literally destroys an entire temple complex without making a single note about it and takes only the shiniest object with no notes about its context or importance. I started playing w3 last week, I have absolutely no prior knowledge about the series, be that game, book, or TV show. Witcher 3 is my introduction to the series, so I knew nothing about the characters going into it, but the bestiary page on the characters helped me learn who/what all the characters are and what they mean to Geralt. Somehow I'm still really enjoying it, even if geralt doesn't control the best. But dear God if Roach stops running while I'm trying to escape from a ??? leveled wyvern again causing me to die and lose 4 hours of exploration because I'm dumb and forgot to save, I might cry. I thought the COD4 to BO2 stretch was pretty great. Everything after was ranged from bad to alright. The new MW was pretty enjoyable, but your rank resetting every season is really discouraging for me. I feel like I'm being punished for not playing. Here's the thing, though. The game takes place after the books. If I hadn't read the books I'd have been absolutely lost on who all these people are, and you're supposed to have known them for years, decades -- even centuries. I played through all the Mysts, Rivens, Rhems, Crystal Key, Quern, and a hundred other games of that genre with my dad and brother. We'd all work together huddled around the computer, someone writing notes down, and we'd still get stuck for HOURS at a time making absolutely no progress. Then you need to run around everywhere again looking closely to see what you could have missed and it can be quite monotonous and difficult. I can understand people having an issue with certain mechanical things such as controls, hitboxes, frames, or also having to do the same fights repeatedly or the same monster with higher stats, but simply being a boss-centered game doesn't strike me as inherently bad. I never played MHW, but I have clocked an ungodly number of hours in MHFU, and I have to say I actually liked that the majority of the game was boss fights, since they're usually my favorite part of other games. That's the general appeal of Monster Hunter series. It's boss battles without a ton of the fluff. Most other games the random mobs are just fodder and Monster Hunter cuts the fluff to a minimal. It's not really a game with a deep story. Oh boy play a game before world and you had so much more fluff. Because who doesn't love building a pirate ship and having canon warship fights on the ocean at the same time giant waves and water spouts and pouring rain are all coming down on you. Like not only do you have to pay attention to where the multiple enemy ships are in battle, you have to account for huge waves that damage your ship. It is crazy. I still think a farcry style star wars game would be awesome. Be a rebel shock trooper fucking up the empires plans on some planet getting the locals riled up to help. I scrolled way down and didn’t see Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order. It is obviously a AAA game (despite weird bugs I encountered in gameplay and cutscenes). I found the gameplay and environments extremely restrictive. A few issues that I had with the game: Combat didn’t feel good to me. The system was so reliant on parries and timing that it didn’t feel like a powerful force wielder with a lightsaber. The skill tree was boring to the point where I didn’t really care what I was unlocking because it didn’t impact the gameplay in a good way. Its personally my favourite game of all time but I can see why ithers might not like it (the combat might seem weird and the story doesn't really start till chapter 5) I bought hollow knight 2 years ago. Played for <2hrs, got stuck, stopped playing. I restarted in quarantine and it was a joy to play. The later power ups helped with mobility a ton and the characters and environments are varied and vibrant. I also gave up my first time playing after getting lost. My first time playing the game I think I had made it to the point of getting the 7th party member before I even realized characters had multiple skill trees, or had any real clue what in the hell affinity coins were for (or that skill links existed), and had probably never crafted a single gem either. I def see what you're saying. You kinda have to create your own objectives, and eventually you just have a backlog of stuff you want to do and the grind can be really enjoyable. It does it stale when you're just by yourself but (and I know you said you don't like playing with other people) when I got into a server with some friends on discord it totally reignited my enjoyment in the game. It does get stale when playing alone, but mods really help that. I've been playing sky factory for about a week now and it's great. This. I've been playing Minecraft for a hair over 10 years now, and I love singleplayer, but no style of play compares to doing survival in a group of 3-4 buds. A slightly larger community is great too, but 3-4 is the best way to play the game, and IMO some of the most fun you can have online. For those who haven't played for a couple years, Mojang has added a LOT since 2018. Each major update has been huge since 1.13. An ocean overhaul, a village overhaul, bees, and a Nether overhaul. To all the people who think I just don't like grindy games, I do, Minecraft is just something that is very repetitive when grinding. At the second survival play through it is very apparent, there's no side quests to keep entertained with, and not a lot of uniqueness to every play through. It plays out just the same every time. I had a similar experience , my roommate forced me to play the first dark souls game , but i found it extremely punishing. Then i tried ds3 and was just amazed by the beautiful world design. Then i finished ds3 + all dlcs , ds1+dlc, ds2softs and sekiro in the quarantine. Im in love with the risk reward system of these games. Right now I'm playing hollow knight and I feel like everyone should experience the satisfaction that these games provide once you master the combat , especially sekiro in which you can theoretically finish the game without using the gourds(healing item) if you're perfect with your parries jumps and dodges.
